Spring Home Inspection – A Checklist for Inspecting your Home’s Interior

April 13th, 2014  |  Home Insurance

Spring is the perfect time of the year to not only do some Spring cleaning, reduce clutter and inspect the exterior of your home; it is also an ideal time to do a home inspection on the interior of your home. This is particular important if you have identified issues outside – which is also a precursors to having issues inside as well.

The Importance of Interior Home Inspections

Do you really have to do an interior home inspection? Yes, you do. It is an important part of being a proactive homeowner and the few hours you spend doing it each year can save you a significant amount of money on home repairs in the future. Small fixes here and there reduce the chances of a major issue arising without your knowledge.

Interior Home Inspection Checklist

Most people get the spring cleaning part right, but often fall short when it comes to doing an interior home inspection. When was the last time you did an inspection of your homes interior? If the answer is not “last year” then it’s time to do one.

Inspect the following areas of your homes interior:

  • Check all windows and doors for air leaks and signs of aging
  • Check your furnace and replace the filter
  • Clean and test the air conditioning unit
  • If you haven’t already, change all the batteries in your smoke detectors
  •  If you have one, check your sump pump and make sure it is working properly – also check if it is time to have it inspected by a professional.
  • Check your basement walls for cracks and signs of moisture and leaks. If you have moisture in your basement then you also need to check for mold
  • Inspect your water heater
  • Check the attic for water leaks and to make sure that your insulation is in good condition
  • Check for signs of mice and other rodents that could have found their way into your home
  • Look for cracks in walls and flooring
  • Check air ducts and clean them out – also clean out the dryer vent
  • Make note of other miscellaneous repairs that need to be addressed

Record your Finding and Follow up with a Professional if Necessary

To make sure that you stay on top of things, it is important that you record all potential issues and address them. Follow up with a professional if the repair is outside of your skill set.

Do you plan to perform ahome inspectionon the interior of your home this spring? Do you inspect your home annually?
