Auto Technology from the 2015 North American International Auto Show

January 27th, 2015  |  Auto Insurance

The North American International Auto Show in Detroit is one of the most highly anticipated events in the auto industry. This year’s event, held at the COBO Center, was met with huge crowds and no shortage of anticipation to see the cars and auto technology manufacturers have to present.

Here are some of the highlights from this year’s auto show:

Ford GT

The one car that has everyone talking is the new 2017 Ford GT that is being introduced this year. This is perhaps the coolest car Ford has ever produced. Designed to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and expected to go into production later this year, this 600 horsepower car will not be cheap, but it’s definitely getting the most buzz and attention from everyone.

3D Printed Car

3D printed cars are no longer a pipe dream—they are real, and you might even get the chance to drive in one at this year’s show. Local Motors presents the Strati, a 3D printed car that comes equipped with an electric drive train but is primarily made out of rubber. It takes about 44 hours to “print,” and it can be thought of as a larger version of a go kart. What is even better is that Local Motors is actually assembling a Strati at the show.

Sync 3

The latest communication and entertainment system from Ford, Sync 3, is getting a lot of attention this year. It has a new user interface, and it even has the ability to update using Wi-Fi, just like your smartphone. However, what is most attractive about the system is its security features. Rather than collecting your data, Ford has put the control of your data in your hands as it provides an “opt in” option every time they use data.

“We only ask for data in order to complete a transaction the user has requested,” Doug VanDagens, Ford’s Global Director of Connected Services Solutions, told Popular Science.

Another added benefit is that it is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, in addition to Ford’s AppLink system.

Mercedes Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion

The Mercedes Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept car takes self-driving cars to the next level. In addition to being a hydrogen powered self-driving car, it also includes multiple touchscreens and has swivelling chairs so passengers can face each other while the car takes them to their destination.

Other cars to check out

There was no shortage of vehicles to discover at this year’s auto show. Other cars you should check out include:

  • 2016 Acura NSX
  • Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept
  • Honda FCV Concept
  • Infiniti Q60 Concept
  • Volkswagen Cross Coupe GRE
