10 Holiday Light Safety Tips for Safe Installation
Putting lights up around the house during the holidays is a tradition that is shared annually by millions of Canadians. Whether you and the family are putting up lights outside or hanging lights on your Christmas tree, it’s important to do so safely.
Here are 10 tips to ensure you hang your holiday lights safely this year:
1. Safety first when installing lights
Safety should be your main concern when hanging light. Make sure you use ladders properly, take precautions against electric shock, and eliminate all tripping hazards.
2. Use approved and certified light strings/sets
Only use Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certified holiday lights that meet industry safety standards. This will help reduce the potential for power outages, getting shocked, and reduces the threat of a fire.
3. Use the right lights
Use the right type of lights. Make sure you only use outdoor lights outside and indoor lights inside. Each type of light is designed for a specific environment.
4. Inspect lights before using
Always visually inspect lights and test each strand before using them. This helps you identify bulbs that need to be replaced and it gives you the chance to look for damaged/frayed light strands. Replace older light strands as necessary.
5. Install lights with the power off
Keep the lights off when connecting them to the outside of your home or when adding them to your Christmas tree. This will prevent you from receiving a shock if there is a power surge.

Turn out all holiday lights before going to bed to ensure they are not overused and do not overheat. Many people use a timer to ensure the lights go out at the same time each night.
