4 home projects to undertake this spring

March 19th, 2017  |  Home

Spring projects can help beautify your home, increase livable space and give your house a fresh new look. The best part is that it doesn’t need to cost a small fortune. All it takes is a little bit of planning, a trip to the home improvement store and an idea (which you can find inspiration for on Pinterest). If cost remains a concern, keep in mind that  with a little love and some DIY spirit, you can complete these spring home projects on your own time and within a budget you can afford.

Upgrade the landscaping

Let’s be honest, planting vegetable and flower gardens can be a lot of work. But after being inside all winter it’s a chance to get outside, let the sun shine down on your skin and enjoy the fresh air. Having a beautifully landscaped exterior is not only uplifting to look ati, it also increases the value of your home because of the curb appeal. If you’re in the market to sell your home, consider investing money on the exterior landscaping to help make a good first impression.

Clean out your closets

This is the definition of spring cleaning. Is cleaning out your closet on your list of spring home projects? If the answer is yes, it’s time to go through your clothing closets and utility storage spaces to clean out all the clutter. There’s no need to throw out all of your unused and unwanted items because someone else might want them.

While rummaging through your belongings make three different piles: donate, trash, reuse. You may be able to save money because you’ll start reusing items you didn’t remember were there. With trash, recycle what you can to spare the environment. And for items that remain serviceable, but are not longer of use to you, haul them don't to a thrift store or charity.

Get the deck in working order

The harsh winter months can wreck havoc on exterior wood. Before setting up furniture and designing your dream outdoor space, maintain what is already there. You may need to sand rough patches on your deck or patio to avoid splinters. You may also need to seal or stain the wood if it has discolouration from the elements.

According to Better Homes and Gardens, your summer deck dreams start in spring. “Nothing says outdoor entertaining like a deck designed to match your home and lifestyle. Planning a new or redesigned deck begins with imagining everything you want the space to be. Even if your ideas seem far-fetched, don't discard them. Who knows? A design professional might make them a reality.”

Paint the interior rooms

It’s hard to paint inside your home during the winter because it’s cold and you can’t take advantage of ventilation with open windows. However, once the weather gets warmer. homeowners can open the windows and let the fresh air in. Before committing to a gallon of paint, bring home swatches and sample cans. This can help you see how different colours work in each room and look with different light.

Remember that all home improvement projects can help increase the value of your home. Therefore homeowners should advise their home insurance provider before undertaking any spring home projects. Your home insurance premiums may increase, but it will be all worth it in the end to insure your beautiful spring home projects make your home a safe and comfortable place for many more seasons to come.
