Taxi Drivers Challenge Aviva: Will Uber Drivers Actually Buy Ride-Share Coverage?

February 3rd, 2016  |  Canadian Business

The Toronto Taxi Alliance (TTA) and Canadian Taxicab Association (CTA) interrupted the excited buzz around Aviva’s new ride-share insurance. And they posed a fair question: are Ontario’s UberX drivers actually going to buy ride-share coverage? Taxi drivers are doubtful.

Aviva is launching ride-share insurance, an insurance plan tailored to the everyday policyholder who operates as an UberX driver for side income. Eligible drivers will be able to add Aviva’s ride-share endorsement to a standard personal auto insurance policy.

But according to Insurance Business Canada, the TTA and CTA think the insurance industry and the commuting public are missing the big picture. Ride-share insurance may be available, but that doesn’t mean all UberX drivers are going to buy it. Especially not if they’ve been driving for Uber this long and haven’t faced any repercussions.

To illustrate their point, the two taxi organizations are demanding that Aviva tell the public how many ride-share endorsements they sell. The TTA and CTA believe the numbers will be miniscule relative to the number of UberX drivers in the province.

And they made one more interesting request. The TTA and CTA suggested Aviva open up its ride-share insurance to eligible taxi drivers too. After all, shouldn’t the taxi industry have access to affordable car insurance as well?
