September 18th, 2014  |  Auto Insurance

“When it comes to vehicle types, women have a 67% stronger preference for crossovers than men, while men were four times more likely to purchase a luxury sports car versus women.” - iSeeCars Study

Women don’t want pink cars. Well, some probably do, but in general, women tend to want the same features men do when buying a car. Is that really surprising? Who doesn’t want a get a good deal on a nice looking and reliable vehicle, right?

With the female demographic now being considered to be one of the biggest marketing opportunities in the world, car industry included, many organizations have invested heavily in research and studies to determine what women want in a car.

Commonalities Between Women and Men When Buying A Car

According to TrueCar.com the following are the four most important considerations, common to women and men, when buying a new car:

  1. Exterior styling – Who doesn’t want to drive a stylish car that looks great? No surprise here.
  2. Value – All consumers want to receive value for the money they spend, especially for high ticket items like cars. Getting a deal is important.
  3. Experience with brand – Brand loyalty is important to people. Customers want to be treated right, and if they experience poor customer service, they will go elsewhere.
  4. Performance – Reliability is important to car shoppers. No one wants a car riddled with recall notices and performance issues.

The Differences

There are a few differences between men and women’s car buying preferences:

  • Women tend to rank fuel economy and safety higher than men
  • Men tend to rank style and performance higher than women
  • Women also have a preference for smaller vehicles such as cross overs and compacts
  • Men have a preference for larger vehicles such as trucks and full size Sedans

What Do The Numbers Say?

A recent study by iSeeCars examined the specific buying patterns and vehicle preferences of men and women. Here are some of the most noteworthy findings of the study:

  • Women are 67% more likely to buy a crossover than men
  • Men are 4 times more likely to buy a luxury sports car than women
  • Men are 4 times more likely to buy vehicles $45K or more
  • Women are 5% more likely to buy a vehicle less than $15 than men
  • Women also have a 67% higher preference for Hyundai than men
  • Men are 76% more likely than women to purchase a British car

When it comes down to it, man or women, you want a reliable car that is a good investment. What are the main factors you look into when buying a car? Is it price? What about safety? What are your deal breakers?
