Travel insurance tips for your honeymoon

June 6th, 2017  |  Travel Insurance

When planning your honeymoon, you’re probably thinking about booking flights, finding hotel accommodations and booking fun activities. Or, less romantically, you might be thinking about the expense. Travel insurance may be the last thing on your mind, but it should definitely be on your to-do list before you jet off to start your happily ever after.

Why do couples need travel insurance for your honeymoon? Although your honeymoon may be your first vacation as husband and wife, it’s still a vacation like any other. Travellers need to insure any issues that arise will not lead to out of pocket expenses. Not being prepared is a pretty easy way to turn a relaxing experience into a stressful one.

Here are four types of travel insurance you should consider for your honeymoon:

Trip cancellation

Whether travelling to an exotic location or staying close to home and travelling within Canada, trip cancellation insurance helps cover non-refundable costs if you need to bail on honeymoon. It’s important to read the fine print when purchasing travel insurance to see what circumstances are covered and which ones aren’t. In general, trip cancellation insurance covers everything from illness to loss of employment.

If you need to cancel the honeymoon, your first course of action is to contact your travel agent, hotel and airline to see if you can be refunded for the vacation. If the answer is no, the second step is to contact your travel insurance provider and file a claim.

Flight delays

Flight delays are annoying. But if you have a connecting flight - especially with a different airline - a long delay can ruin your entire trip. One delay can lead to a missed connection, which can lead to another delay and the purchasing of two more tickets. Spending your honeymoon at an airport isn't the most romantic thing in the world.

Sometimes travellers get lucky and a flight delay is only a few hours, but what if the flight is delayed overnight? Flight delay insurance helps cover the costs of hotels, personal amenities, transportation and food while in between flights. Travellers need to pay for the additional costs, but can then file a claim for reimbursement.

Medical coverage

If you get injured or sick while on your honeymoon medical insurance will help cover the cost of doctor visits, hospital stays, medication and operations. No one wants to think about getting seriously ill while on their honeymoon, but it can happen and medical expenses in foreign countries can be very expensive.

Purchasing medical insurance before you leave also ensures you have access to a preferred network of health care professionals who speak English – that will come in handy if you get sick while travelling.

Baggage loss

Picture this: you set off on your honeymoon, have a great flight and arrive at your destination on time. Perfect, right? But what happens when you get to the baggage claim and your luggage hasn’t arrived as smoothly as you have? Baggage loss and delay insurance covers the cost of additional items and supplies you need to buy if you arrive on your honeymoon, but your luggage does not.

You can get these types of travel insurance by searching online for the lowest rate. Each can be purchased individually or together. If you have a travel rewards credit card or insurance benefits with your employer, it’s important to check if you’re covered before purchasing supplemental travel insurance.
