iPhone 6 and Distracted Driving – Do New Technology Releases Impact Road Safety?

September 28th, 2014  |  Auto Insurance

With the release of every new iPhone comes the frenzy of people clamoring to be one of the first to get their hands on the latest phone. People line up for hours on end just to get the latest phone. This often leads to people spending hours and hours playing with their device and learning about the new features and applications they have at their disposal. It’s addicting for many and it can be argued that the release of the new iPhone 6 is a distraction.

The new iPhone also poses a number of questions about distracted driving. Does the new iPhone create a new temptation for drivers when they are behind the wheel? Are drivers more likely to use their phone while driving when they get a new phone? Is there a correlation between distracted driving incidents and the release of a new type of mobile technology? The same can be asked about pedestrians. Are there more distracted pedestrians when a new iPhone is released to the public?

While there is no data to provide a answer to these questions, the questions still bring up an important point about how technology impacts our lives and can distracted us from important things, especially driving. Should be we more cautious when new technology is released into the marketplace? Do we need to be more diligent as drivers to eliminate the tempting distractions that new technology like the iPhone 6 pose?

Distracted Driving App for iPhone 6 Being Developed

Announced to coincide with the release of the iPhone 6, application developer, Protect Mobility, is in the process of developing a distracted driving application for the iPhone 6 and it is expected to be released by this holiday season. With an estimated 80 million iPhone 6 units expected to be shipped this year, this app could make a large impact on reducing distracted driving. Ultimately, the app should help drivers focus on the road when driving, that is, if they download the distracted driving app.
