The importance of washing your car during the winter

December 10th, 2012  |  Auto Insurance

While people tend to focus on keeping their car clean during the summer, most fail to do the same during the winter. Your vehicles get dirty very quickly during the winter from dirt, grime, snow, slush and road salt.

Most people don’t clean their vehicles for three main reasons:

  1. They know their car is just going to get dirty as soon as they drive it again
  2. They don’t want to pay to have their car washed
  3. They don’t want to stand outside and wash their car when it’s cold outside

However, failure to wash your vehicle during the winter months can actually have serious repercussions for your vehicle.

Prepare your vehicle for the winter weather

You need to be prepared to protect your vehicle from the harsh winter weather. The first thing that you should do is wash your car thoroughly and add a good coat of wax on your car. This will help to not only protect it from the weather; it will also make it easy to brush off the snow when it comes. And, don’t forget the interior. Make sure that you replace your current floor mats with some rubber ones to protect the floor.

Why you need to wash your car in the winter

Once the winter comes, it is best to wash your car on a regular basis. Many people don’t realize just how bad road salt is for your vehicle. Since it is very corrosive, if you allow it to sit on your car it will eat away at the body of your vehicle, which will lead to unwanted rust. Even if the salt has dried, it is still very corrosive and will harm your vehicle.

How often should you wash your car in the winter? This depends on how often you drive and how much road salt is used in your area. As a general rule, you should wash it as least once every two weeks. However, if you start to see road salt marks on your car, it is probably a good time to get it washed.
