6 Ways to Prevent Getting Sick when Vacationing

November 17th, 2014  |  Travel Insurance

Vacations are a time to relax, not deal with a cold or other ailment. This last thing you want to happen it to get sick when you are on vacation, but it happen to thousands of travellers each year.

Here's our top 6 ways to prevent getting sick while on vacation:

  1.  Drink Lots of Water & Make Sure its Bottled

We know we need to drink lots of water, and vacations are no different. Make sure that you are getting your 8 glasses of water per day. This is especially true if you are going to be out sightseeing all day or in the sun.  On vacation, it may be best to play it safe and stick to bottled water. Bottled water is potable, tap water may not be.

  2.  Get Your Rest

Make sure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night. On vacation we have a tendency to want to do it all, see it all and be out till the wee hours of the morning. If you are going to be up late, try and get some sleep the next morning. If you can, catch an afternoon siesta. It is important that you get your rest to ensure your body’s defences are maximized.

  3.  Skip the Ice

You may want to skip the ice while on vacation. While bottled water is safe to drink, ice is often made with tap water. Your immune system is not accustomed to all of the micro bacteria and micro enzymes that exist in other areas, which can make you very ill to your stomach. Do yourself a favour and skip the ice.

  4.  Wash Your Hands and Carry Hand Sanitizer

Your mother always told you to wash your hands before you eat and vacations are no different.  No sink in the establishment or not near a sink? Keep a travel sized bottle of hand sanitizer with you and make sure you scrub near and under your nails and on the back of your hands.  This will ensure you are not putting germs and other bacteria into your mouth.

  5.  Take Immune Boosters and Vitamins

Before you go, while you are there and after you get back, take immune boosters and your vitamins. During your vacation you may be exposed to all sorts of people, places and experiences. Some of these, such as colds, flus and stomach bacteria can make you very sick. By taking vitamins and boosting your immune system you give your body what it needs to fight anything it comes up against.

  6.  Eat Healthy Snacks

We are what we eat. If you are eating all sorts of greasy and fried foods, your body is not in its best condition to fight illness. Keep healthy snacks such as granola bars or fruit with you while you travel. This way, if you get hungry while at the beach, or sightseeing, you can grab something on the go that is healthy, offers you the vitamins you need to keep up your strength and to keep your immune system strong.

Follow these steps to avoid illness while on vacation and have an amazing trip! Just in case, make sure you have good travel insurance coverage, just in case you need to see a doctor. Get a travel insurance quote for your trip!
